Rivers
I want to cliff jump into the Mad, where the Vermont locals cheered me on to overcome my nervousness. I want to freshen up in the Ottauquechee after opting to sleep in the woods instead of the Woodstock hotel. I want to step across the shaky rope bridge over the Red to reach the Natural Bridge of Kentucky. I want to find that ladder in the upstate New York forest that took me underground, where...

Better
I knew that I could make some new friends by taking a class at school over winter break. But I didn’t anticipate having this much fun. The best way to describe my time here is that it’s like orientation. I feel like this makes up for the “first semester of freshman year experience” that I never had. I’m finally meeting the people I should have met in the fall of 2010. Regrets have been resolved....

Biking Through a Boston Winter
I am happy to know that I have biked every day since returning to Boston. January can be a depressing month because I don’t like being cooped up inside. I need to be outside and I need to be active. I feel so lucky that there has not been any snow this winter, because the bike lanes in Boston are clear! Biking is the best way for me to get outside during the winter, and it reminds me during the...

“Every two seconds, somewhere in the world, eight babies are born, about half of them girls. Some 81% will live in poor countries. The hard truths are that most women in the world who are giving birth today are poor and illiterate, with little access to health care; that most girls in our world will face discrimination, poverty, unequal access to education and health care, and unequal pay for...

I feel incredibly lucky for the year that I’ve had. I have bad experiences under my belt, and while they have helped shape who I am, I feel fortunate for a year of relative ease. Completing a term of service with AmeriCorps wasn’t easy, gardening full time with a broken wrist took perseverance, and I was devastated when my bike was stolen but immediately started fixing up a used one. The obstacles...
